THIS MONTH'S TIP: Stop swaying for better contact.
One of my favorite sayings that long time teaching professional John Gerring used was: "Golf is a two legged game played one leg at a time, don't get caught on the wrong leg". It speaks volumes about the dynamic balance of the golf swing. Too often we keep too much weight on the target side of our body then fall back on the opposite side as we swing through. Imagine a right handed baseball pitcher, pitching out of the stretch trying to throw off the wrong foot, the results would be less than satisfactory!!. To correct this problem I like to have my students begin with more weight at address on their back foot and simply try to turn their front shoulder and arm back to start the swing. At the top of your back swing this should put the buttons on your shirt directly over your right knee if you are right handed. From this position it is simply a matter of turning back to the ball and allowing your arms to swing freely back to the ball. After impact you should be balanced over your front foot. A good drill to work on balance is to hit balls with your feet tight together. Swing and try not to fall off balance.
