THIS MONTH'S TIP: Playing a pitch shot from the rough.
South Carolina, hot humid summers and Bermuda grass, they
were meant for each other! Unfortunately for your golf game they aren't
the greatest of combinations. One of our more difficult shots at Oak Hills is playing a pitch shot from the thick rough that surrounds our greens. The grass has a tendency to grab your club face and shut it down causing you to hit a chunky shot. The right club can make a huge difference in playing this shot. I believe you should use a very lofted wedge. (60 degrees or more)
First play the ball back in your stance, open up slightly so your lower body is pointed left of your target. (For a right-handed player) Second choke down on the club. Third grip it tighter than normal. Fourth take the club back on a steeper plane than you would for a normal shot. Fifth as you swing down make sure you accelerate through the shot holding the club face open at impact. Most of the time the shot will come out of the rough with little or no spin so allow for the ball to run more once it hits the green. This is very similair to a "chunk and run" bunker shot.
With just a little practice you will get more balls on the green and give yourself a chance to save par.
